Technology Support FAQ

Technology Support FAQ

Clear guidance from your Technical Guardian Angel.

Clear answers to common questions about computer repair, managed IT services, networks, data protection, and professional website design.

Computer repair and support

How much does computer repair cost?

Cost depends on diagnosis time, parts, data-protection needs, and whether support is remote, on site, or performed at a workbench. ALG explains the service path before proceeding with substantial work.

Should I repair my computer or replace it?

Repair is often worthwhile when the device still meets your needs and the problem is isolated. Replacement may be better when several major components are failing, the operating system is no longer secure, or repeated downtime costs more than a suitable new device.

Can a slow computer be fixed?

Often, yes. Common causes include limited storage or memory, unwanted software, overheating, failing storage, operating-system problems, and background applications. Diagnosis should identify the cause before upgrades are recommended.

Should I back up my data before repair?

If the computer still operates, create a current backup first. If files are already inaccessible, avoid reinstalling the operating system or repeatedly running unverified recovery tools because they can overwrite recoverable data.

Do you provide remote and on-site support?

Yes. Many software, account, and configuration issues can be handled remotely. Networking, business equipment, and multi-device problems may be better suited to on-site support. See remote and on-site options.

Can you help with gaming PCs and custom computers?

ALG supports gaming PCs, desktops, laptops, peripherals, upgrades, performance troubleshooting, and connected home technology. The repair path depends on the components and symptoms involved.

Managed IT and MSP services

What is an MSP?

A managed service provider becomes an ongoing technology partner for support, maintenance, networks, cloud systems, security, backups, documentation, and planning. The relationship is proactive rather than limited to one repair.

Does a small business really need managed IT?

Managed IT becomes valuable when recurring problems consume employee time, nobody owns technology decisions, onboarding is inconsistent, or downtime affects customers. Very small organizations with occasional needs may prefer project-based support.

How is managed IT priced?

Providers may charge per user, per device, through a flat monthly package, or with a blended model. Compare what is included—especially security, backups, on-site work, projects, and after-hours support—not only the headline rate.

What should an MSP provide?

Common services include help-desk support, device and account administration, Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace management, networks, identity controls, backups, security, documentation, and technology planning. The agreement should define exact responsibilities.

How quickly should an MSP respond?

Response expectations should be documented by priority. A system-wide outage should not be treated like a routine request. Ask how priority is determined, which channels are monitored, and what happens outside normal hours.

Can an MSP help with cybersecurity and backups?

Yes, but responsibilities must be explicit. Managed security can include account protection, patching, endpoint controls, monitoring, backups, recovery planning, and employee guidance. No single tool eliminates all risk.

Website design and development

How much does a professional website cost?

Cost is shaped by page scope, content, custom design, forms, e-commerce, integrations, accessibility, search preparation, and post-launch support. A useful proposal explains deliverables and recurring costs instead of quoting only a page count.

Should I build my own website or hire a professional?

A builder can work for a simple project when you have time to create and maintain it. Professional help is more valuable when the site must reflect an established brand, generate inquiries, integrate with business systems, or remain supported after launch.

How long does website design take?

Timing depends on scope, feedback, content readiness, and integrations. Delays often come from missing copy, photography, access credentials, or late changes. A clear discovery process and content schedule make the timeline more predictable.

Will my website work on mobile devices?

Responsive behavior should be part of every modern build. Testing should cover phones, tablets, intermediate widths, keyboard navigation, zoom, forms, and actual page content—not only a desktop mockup.

Can I update the website myself after launch?

That depends on the platform and agreement. Ownership, administrator access, training, licenses, backups, and maintenance responsibilities should be documented before the project begins.

What happens after my website launches?

Plan for security updates, backups, analytics, content improvement, accessibility, performance, domain and hosting renewals, and support. ALG’s Digital Intervention service includes a long-term technical perspective.
